Annual cancer report spotlights racial disparities
The annual Cancer in Iowa report released today by University of Iowa researchers focuses on racial disparities among Iowa cancer diagnoses.
Dr. Nalo Johnson, director of health promotion and chronic disease prevention at the Iowa Department of Public Health, says the report shows the age-adjusted cancer mortality rate for black Iowans is more than 25-percent greater than it is for white Iowans.
“It’s not only important to examine the data, but to examine the data in the most appropriate way,” Johnson says. “In this case, understanding that we need to compare age-adjusted rates of disease in order to have a true understanding of the cancer burden in the state, given the higher proportion of older adults who are white and the fact that an individual has a greater risk for cancer as they age.” ....

Cancer in Iowa: Black Iowans die at disproportionate rates, study finds

Black people in Iowa develop and die from cancer at higher rates than their neighbors, according to an annual report from researchers at the University of Iowa.
“The causes of these disparities are deeply ingrained in our society, and it will take significant effort at many levels over a long period of time to address them,” Dr. George Weiner, the director of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa s Hospitals and Clinics, told reporters. “If we are able to do so successfully, it will benefit all Iowans.”
Weiner and the co-authors of the report presented their findings, with a focus on racial disparities, during a virtual panel Wednesday morning. ....
