Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Fazl Pechuho has confirmed the detection of the South African and Brazilian variants of the coronavirus in Karachi. Dr Pechuho said on Friday that the variants, which were more lethal than the original Wuhan variant, were detected in samples collected by Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH).
In a video message, the health minister said AKUH had collected 13 samples for a genomic study and of those, 10 were found infected with the United Kingdom variant of the coronavirus - the presence of which was confirmed in Karachi in an earlier genomic study - two were found infected with the South African variant and the one remaining was infected with the Brazilian variant. ....

Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Pechuho informed on Monday that the South African and Brazilian variants of the novel coronavirus disease have been found in samples taken by the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH).
In a video message posted on the Sindh Health and Population Welfare Department s official Twitter account, the provincial health minister disclosed that the AKUH collected 13 samples to perform genomic study confirming the variants of the virus. ....

KARACHI/ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN, April 30 (Reuters) - Health officials in the Pakistani province of Sindh said they have detected two coronavirus variants first identified in Brazil and South Africa.
It would be the first detection of those variants in Pakistan confirmed by officials.
Yesterday 13 samples underwent genomic study at the Agha Khan University Hospital, of these 10 were of the UK variant, and 2 were of the Africa and Brazil variants , Minister for Health & Population Welfare, Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho said on Friday.
The highly contagious variants were discovered at a hospital in Karachi, Pakistan s largest city, which has also reported the most deaths in any city, accounting for 3,903 of the country s 17,811 deaths.
