As a global proposal from India and South Africa to waive intellectual property (IP) on Covid-19-linked health technologies garners support, the Organisation of Pharmaceutical Producers of India (OPPI) has countered that such a move “will neither lead to increased production of vaccines nor increased deployment”. Instead, they caution, it could open the door for counterfeit vaccines.
OPPI’s response comes days after the US put its might behind the IP waiver for vaccines during the pandemic period, a move that is expected to swing the support of other countries that may have earlier opposed the proposal at the WTO. ....

A “near drowning” test that uses small animals in the testing for depression and mood disorder drugs has come in for criticism, with pro-animal groups approaching the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI). The test that has been stopped by some international pharmaceutical companies.
In fact, the DCGI is said to have sought responses from three pharmaceutical associations on a representation from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) on the “forced swim test” (FST). ....

Industry body Organisation of Pharmaceutical Producers of India (OPPI) on Monday said it has elected S Sridhar as its next President for a period of two years, effective from February 15, 2021.
He takes over from former Managing Director of Boehringer Ingelheim India, Sharad Tyagi, OPPI said in a statement.
Sridhar is the Managing Director of Pfizer and is heading the company s commercial business in India, it added.
He has been a member of the Executive Committee of OPPI for the past six years and has also chaired its Finance and Taxation Work Group, OPPI said. ....

The Organisation of Pharmaceutical Producers of India (OPPI) has elected S Sridhar as its next President. The term is for a period of two years and is effective from February 15, 2021. He takes over from Sharad Tyagi, Former Managing Director, Boehringer Ingelheim India Pvt Ltd. Sridhar is the Managing Director of Pfizer Limited and is heading Pfizer Inc’s commercial business in India. Sridhar has been a member of the Executive Committee of OPPI for the past six years and has also chaired its Finance and Taxation Work Group. Sridhar is a strong voice of healthcare transformation in the country and was the chair of FICCI’s Pharma Committee till recently. ....
