I-49 extension moves into next phase of development in Arkansas

The Arkansas Department of Transportation is moving on to the next phase of project development for the construction of Interstate 49 from Highway 22 in Sebastian County to Interstate 40 in Crawford County.
The work to be done is about 13.6 miles long with an estimated price tag of $787 million, including a new bridge over the Arkansas River that may cost between $300 million and $400 million, according to Arkansas Department of Transportation District 4 Engineer Chad Adams.
Work during the next phase of the I-49 extension includes getting agency approvals for the re-evaluation of the 1997 Final Environment Impact Statement, preparing required agency construction permits, and developing final design and construction plans for a non-tolled facility from Highway 22 to I-40. ....

The Arkansas Department of Transportation is moving forward with the next phase of development for the Interstate 49 extension from Alma to Barling.
The Arkansas Department of Transportation is moving on to the next phase of project development for the construction of Interstate 49 from Highway 22 in Sebastian County to Interstate 40 in Crawford County.

Arkansas weather: 3-5 inches of snow, single-digit temps in Fort Smith

Fort Smith has received 3-5 inches of snowfall throughout the city and could get up to 11 more inches through Thursday. The temperature in the city was at 4 degrees at 7:59 a.m. Monday and is forecast to drop to -3 degrees on Tuesday morning.
The National Weather Service forecasts a second snowstorm will begin after midnight Tuesday and taper off Thursday morning, bringing 8-11 inches of snow. It will not begin to melt at least until Friday, which is the first forecast day with temps above freezing.
NWS Meteorologist Tyler Snider said roads will hopefully be drivable by the weekend. But the snow could stay at least another week after Friday due to the snowpack affecting high temperatures in the 40s or 50s. ....

I-49-bridge and possible bridge to reroute traffic not cheap

Estimated costs of constructing the I-49 bridge and a possible bridge to reroute traffic away from downtown Fort Smith aren t cheap, but one state official says there s a lot to be considered in the projections.
Halff Associates estimated the cost of constructing a bridge in eastern Oklahoma to reroute trucks off of Garrison Avenue would be $225 million. It s less than the estimated cost of the I-49 bridge to connect Chaffee Crossing to Alma, which Arkansas Department of Transportation District 4 Engineer Chad Adams estimated would cost between $300 million to $400 million.
These estimates come as ArDOT has launched an 18-month traffic study that will assess how to best alleviate truck traffic in downtown Fort Smith, including the possibility of a bridge. It also comes on the heels of the passage of Issue 1, which Arkansas Highway Commissioner Keith Gibson said will secure $270 million in the next 10 years toward I-49 through the extension of the stat ....
