Burnham: Ormiston Rivers wants to increase pupil intake | Maldon and Burnham Standard


A SCHOOL is undertaking a consultation to increase its admission intake by a whole classroom per year.
Meetings have been taking place between Essex County Council and Ormiston Academies Trust, the group which runs Ormiston Rivers in Burnham, over recent months.
To satisfy the future requirements for secondary school places defined within Essex county’s ten-year plan, the academy is asking parents and staff if the school should increase capacity by an additional 30 pupils.
In a letter, principal Emma Baker said: “The trustees see the proposed expansion of the school as an opportunity to meet the increasing demand for places within the local area, whilst continuing to offer an excellent education to all students. ....

Mums upset at Brightlingsea Colne School choice - 50 miles away


Mrs Roughley has complained to MP John Whittingdale, Essex County Council, and the Department for Education.
Mum-of-four Victoria Nottage, 36, from Bradwell, said her 11-year-old daughter Ruby, who also goes to St Cedd’s, would be going to the Colne as well.
She said: “It’s an absolute joke. It works out at 500 miles of travelling per week.

“People wouldn’t do it for work, so expecting an 11-year-old to do it for school is unreal.
“My daughter is so upset. She’s said she’ll end up with no friends.
“If she has no school, I’ll have no choice but to relocate. ....

AN MP has waded into a row over school placements after parents in the Dengie discovered their child would be sent dozens of miles away – despite having a secondary school on their doorstep.
Maldon MP John Whittingdale has been contacted by a number of parents worried about their allocated places at secondary schools,
After hearing these concerns, he met with Essex County Council leaders to discuss the matter.
John Whittingdale MP said: “I fully understand their concern and agree that it is wholly unrealistic to expect children to travel such distances on a daily basis.
“I have met with Ray Gooding, Cabinet Member for Education, and Clare Kershaw, Director for Education, at Essex County Council. ....
