SANFORD, Fla. – A new study from the Orlando Regional Realtor’s Association shows the average cost of a house in Central Florida is $315,000, driven by the booming population growth even through the pandemic.
That growth is also driving up rent prices, now averaging $1536 as reported by CoStar group making finding affordable housing or rent nearly impossible for those who are either on fixed or lower incomes, like Thellis Houck.
“I had to go from apartment to apartment and they were way too much, $1,500 dollars a month, I can’t afford that,” Houck said. ....

Community leaders believe revitalizing the neighborhood begins with making sure there are affordable homes because Central Florida is currently in an affordable housing crisis.
SANFORD, Fla. - Historic Goldsboro in Sanford is getting its first large-scale development in more than 20 years. Officials hope it will be a catalyst to revitalizing the neighborhood.
Wendover Housing Partners partnered with the Orlando Housing Authority and the Sanford Housing Authority to build a 16.3 million dollar affordable housing complex in the neighborhood.
The Monroe Landings apartment complex located at 375 S. Oleander Avenue is expected to open in late 2021 or early 2022. Initially, 60 units will open, followed by an additional 80. The Board of Directors of the Kinneret Apartments announced on Friday, April 23, that it has approved a plan to sell the Kinneret Apartments located in downtown Orlando to a qualified buyer. The proceeds from the potential sale will be invested in programs and services for older adults at the Kinneret Apartments and the central Florida community to continue Kinneret s mission of Caring for Those Who Cared for Us for generations to come.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – As we celebrate Black History Month, News 6 is reflecting on some of Central Florida’s deep roots, including what’s recognized as Orlando’s first Black community.
According to the city of Orlando, Jonestown was not an official city when it was founded in 1880.
Then, Jonestown was a 12-block community inhabited by Blacks near the banks of Fern Creek and Greenwood Cemetery.
The town was named after Sam Jones and his wife, Penny, who are recognized as its first residents. Little is known about these early African-American settlers, aside from the fact that they were once slaves. ....
