Marine fuel stakeholders encouraged to access free workshop

Barriers and risks
The workshop materials include a collection of slides, broken down into four sessions, as well as an example programme and other related practical resources.
“A wide range of alternative fuels for ships are currently under discussion and the maritime fuel landscape keeps continuously evolving. This training package presents a comprehensive resource on alternative fuels and aims to support maritime stakeholders in making informed decisions. Whether government officials looking to spur innovation, ship owners selecting a fuel for ships they order, or fuel suppliers weighing up investments in new bunkering infrastructure, this workshop could be of interest to you,” explains Astrid Dispert, Project Technical Manager at IMO’s Department for Partnerships and Projects. ....

CO2-Enhanced Oil Recovery For Decarbonization

CO2-Enhanced Oil Recovery For Decarbonization
May 3, 2021 6:30:pm
Summary
In a future in which the energy system faces dual challenges – addressing carbon concerns and transitioning away from hydrocarbons altogether – reducing the carbon impact of fuels will become a key tool in meeting climate and energy goals.

CO2-Enhanced Oil Recovery For Decarbonization
As an example, jet fuel is very difficult to substitute due to the low energy density of batteries and the high cost of alternatives like hydrogen, making an upstream solution the only option until technology and costs evolve. Thus, making the best of the existing energy supply chain through decarbonization is a realistic and cost-effective option for the mid-term and warrants investigation. ....

Global Energy Governance: Meeting The Challenge Of The Energy Transition

Global Energy Governance: Meeting The Challenge Of The Energy Transition
Feb 19, 2021 10:15:am
Summary
Policymakers worldwide face the Herculean task of making the energy system more sustainable and climate friendly. While the world has seen other energy transitions, this one is different. In the past the world switched from one energy source (wood, coal, oil, electricity) to another, and the fuel switch was driven by major inventions (steam engine, combustion engine, light bulb).

Global Energy Governance: Meeting The Challenge Of The Energy Transition
These transitions happened organically, reflecting technological life and innovation cycles and without too much concern about lock-in effects. This time, a whole range of new, climate-friendly energy sources and applications must be deployed, and this must happen rapidly. ....

Fraunhofer: green hydrogen imports not as easy as you think [GasTransitions]

Fraunhofer: green hydrogen imports not as easy as you think [GasTransitions]
Jan 19, 2021 8:55:am
Summary
Most studies underestimate the complexity of the large-scale imports of green hydrogen, according to a new study from the German Fraunhofer Institute. They also focus too much on costs rather than on expected future prices. The ambitious German hydrogen strategy relies strongly on large green hydrogen imports from developing countries in the future. [Gas Transitions Volume 2, Issue 1]

Fraunhofer: green hydrogen imports not as easy as you think [GasTransitions]
The German government has the ambition to become the world-leading “green hydrogen” nation, in terms of technology, but its “hydrogen strategy” has one weak link: it is based to a large extent on hydrogen imports. Germany has far too little solar and wind resources to produce the amounts of hydrogen it needs for its decarbonisat ....

EU fight over role of natural gas ends in compromises [GasTransition]

EU fight over role of natural gas ends in compromises [GasTransition]
Jan 14, 2021 7:15:am
Summary
The month of December saw an intense struggle within the EU over the role of natural gas in the energy transition coming to a head. The predictable result: several compromises with some wins and some losses for advocates of natural gas. [Gas Transitions Volume 2, Issue 1]
by: Karel Beckman
With support for coal and oil definitely ruled out under EU policymaking, the debate over the future of fossil fuels now centres squarely on the role of natural gas. According to climate campaigners, only investments in renewable energy are compatible with the Green Deal, the overarching instrument by which the EU intends to achieve its 2030 and 2050 climate targets of -55% emissions and net zero emissions respectively. In their vision, renewable energy includes “green” hydrogen, based on renewables, but excludes any role for “blue” hydrogen, ....
