How February's Once-in-a-Generation Storm Altered Life on Campus and Across the City

Sunday, February 14, 2021
As lovebirds hunker down together to celebrate Valentine’s Day with what looks to be a romantic evening snowfall, rumors swirl that Texas’ grid infrastructure might not be able to handle the upcoming inclement weather.
Many Texans quickly learn that Texas is the only state in the nation with its own power grid, mainly to avoid federal regulation. That grid is operated by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), a company that releases warnings that “rolling outages” in duration of 10-45 minutes could befall customers across the state if demand outstrips supply.
As a precautionary measure, UT announces that campus will close at 4 p.m. and remain closed until Wednesday, February 17, at 8 a.m. That includes all virtual classes as well. UT Libraries immediately close. ....

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and Austin Energy unveil large Community Solar project atop parking garage

AUSTIN, Texas – Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) and Austin Energy celebrate the completion of a new solar panel array constructed on the AUS campus that will produce 1.8 megawatts of locally-generated, renewable energy. The new solar array marks a milestone in both Austin Energy’s Community Solar Program and AUS’s portfolio of sustainability efforts. The array will provide 1.5 megawatts of power to the Utility’s Community Solar Program and .3 megawatts of renewable energy benefits toward future airport construction projects and the airport’s administration building.

With 6,642 solar panels spanning across a distance that is equal size to two football fields, the array on the top floor of the airport’s Blue Garage is the largest on-site renewable energy installation on the AUS campus. The panels offer shaded parking for Blue Garage customers and will generate enough solar energy to power up to 160 homes per year. ....

'This just feels insufficient:' Austin City Council gets few answers on winter storm

This just feels insufficient: Austin City Council gets few answers on winter storm
Ryan Autullo, Austin American-Statesman
On Thursday, the Austin City Council gathered to address last week s winter weather meltdown, though council members got little opportunity to grill utility officials on what happened that led to much of the city losing power and water and what s being done to make sure it doesn t happen again.
Morning briefings from utility executives Sidney Jackson of Austin Energy and Greg Meszaros of Austin Water included a brief question-and-answer period, with each council member limited to a single inquiry or comment. The meeting s design was for the council to approve financial assistance to residents staring at scary bills from the storm, rather than to get a thorough explanation on last week s events. ....

With power restored to more than 96% of
Austin Energy customers, local leaders’ priority has shifted to restoring water service to Austin residents in the wake of the Texas winter storm crisis.
Austin Energy General Manager
Jackie Sargent reported that as of noon on Friday, Feb. 19, just 22,000 of the public utility’s customers were without power, down from 10 times that number – approximately 42% of the utility’s customers – at the worst point of the crisis Tuesday. Early Friday morning, the ....
