Hollis Mead Organic Dairy in Hooke has been nominated for a BBC Food And Farming Award. It is one of three finalists in the Farming for the Future category of the awards. Hollis Mead is an organic dairy farm whose ethos is to produce high quality organic milk and food whilst enhancing the environment for wildlife. Nature is allowed to take its course and no pesticides, insecticides, herbicides or artificial fertilisers are used. The farm has 12 miles of hedges and is seeing a rise in insect and bird life gone up dramatically – all being monitored by Dorset Wildlife Trust. Hollis Mead organic dairy at Hooke, near Beaminster, has opened a hedgehog hotel. The farm wants to ensure this prickled favourite of the British countryside can thrive. Hollis Mead proclaims to hold the protection and encouragement of nature as central to their farming approach and has adopted more than 40 hedgehogs. They hope that the biodiversity, farming methods and extensive habitats available on their farm will give a boost to dwindling hedgehog numbers, which have halved in the last 20 years. Habitat loss and industrial farming practice is thought to be the key driver in their demise and hedgehogs are now listed as “vulnerable to extinction” on the Red List for British Mammals. ....
