S&P/ASX 200 trades near flatline as NSW reports highest number of new COVID-19 cases in 14 months

S&P/ASX 200 (INDEXASX:XJO) gained 0.08% to 7,334.6 points by about 2.30 pm as NSW reported 38 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, the highest number of daily cases recorded in more than 14 months.
NSW Premier said the latest case numbers are too high and pleaded with people to stop visiting extended family, and to limit compassionate care visits to a single person.

S&P/ASX 200 dips on the first day of FY22 after closing out its best year on record
OPEC+ may discuss on Thursday about extending the current oil production cuts beyond its original end date of April 2022. The crude oil price is near multi-year highs and recorded its seventh monthly gain in the past eight months.
S&P/ASX 200 (INDEXASX:XJO) has slipped 0.48% to 7,277.6 following mixed moves overnight on Wall Street, with the S&P 500 hitting another record high while the Nasdaq fell 0.2%.
The local index has surged 24% in the last 12 months for its best year on record.

Brent crude futures gained 0.5% to US$75.05 a barrel as hopes for a demand recovery persisted despite new outbreaks of the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus. Gold slipped 0.93% to US$1,761.66 per ounce on Tuesday, its lowest level since mid-April as the dollar strengthened in the run-up to this week’s US jobs report.
S&P/ASX 200 (INDEXASX:XJO) has gained 0.63% to 7,347 by about 1 pm after the Nasdaq and S&P 500 hit record highs on Wall Street overnight.
The local index is on track to advance for the ninth consecutive month in June with a monthly gain of 2.5% and a ~25% rise for the financial year which ends today.
