A romantic touch with Sarasota Ballet
The Sarasota Ballet revisits two popular works from past seasons with its fifth digital program this weekend. Ballet lovers can experience “Amorosa,” a 2019 piece by principal dancer and resident choreographer Ricardo Graziano that is being performed for the first time since its premiere. It is set to Antonio Vivaldi’s “Cello Concertos.” Also on the program is George Balanchine’s 1960 ballet “Donizetti Variations,” which is danced to music from Gaetano Donizetti’s opera “Don Sebastian.” The program is available Friday through Tuesday for $35. Selby Gardens opens Monet goes Pop! with art work by Roy Lichtenstein


Staff members at Selby Botanical Gardens admit they may have gotten carried away with inspiration while designing their latest art-meets-nature exhibition “Roy Lichtenstein: Monet’s Garden Goes Pop!”
“We just went a little crazy,” said Mike McLaughlin, the director of horticulture, who worked with a team of staff members to transform the conservatory and grounds into an assortment of whimsical displays that reflect Lichtenstein’s Pop art interpretations of classic works by French Impressionist painter Claude Monet of his gardens in Giverny, France, and his famed haystacks.
“There was a lot to work from,” McLaughlin said of the latest entry in the Jean and Alfred Goldstein Exhibition Series, which opens today and continues through June 27 at Selby’s downtown Sarasota campus. The series has previously featured botanical-related art work by Marc Chagall, Paul Gauguin, Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali. ....

Sarasota Opera returns with a ‘Happy Deception’
A new Sarasota Opera season gets underway this weekend with the opening of Rossini’s one-act comic opera “The Happy Deception.” Soprano Hanna Brammer stars as the Duchess Isabella, who disappears and washes ashore in a small mining town, where she is taken in and cared for by a kindly miner, played by bass/baritone Alexander Charles Boyd (Brammer’s real-life husband). Tenor Christopher Bozeka plays her grieving husband, Duke Bertrando. The company also includes bass Joshua DeVane and baritone Joseph Beutel. Artistic Director Victor DeRenzi leads a smaller-than-usual orchestra and Martha Collins is the stage director. The production kicks off a four-show season that runs through April with shorter and more intimate productions to allow for social distancing and enhanced safety protocols. “The Happy Deception” will be presented live in the Sarasota Opera House for six performances through Feb. 25, and will later be ....
