Micro-engineered, bioinspired design allows the material to collect moisture from cool fog as well as generating and collecting steam under sun
Tiny structures inspired by the shape of cactus spines allow a newly created material to gather drinkable water from the air both day and night, combining two water-harvesting technologies into one.
The material, a micro-architected hydrogel membrane (more on that later), can produce water through both solar steam-water generation and fog collection-two independent processes that typically require two separate devices. A paper about the material was published in Nature Communications on May 14. ....

Contrary to Previous Belief, Strike-Slip Faults Can Generate Large Tsunamis

On September 28, 2018, an inexplicably large tsunami devastated the Indonesian coastal city of Palu and several others nearby. Between the tsunami and the magnitude 7.5 earthquake that caused it, some 4,340 people were killed, making it the deadliest earthquake that year.
The tsunami’s waves reached around six meters high, which was a shock to geophysicists who had believed that earthquakes along a strike-slip fault could only trigger far smaller tsunamis for that particular region. Now, new research describes a mechanism for these large tsunamis to form, and suggests that other coastal cities that were thought to be safe from massive tsunamis may need to reevaluate their level of risk. ....

Bethany Ehlmann Testifies about Mars Rover to a U.S. House Subcommittee

Bethany Ehlmann, professor of planetary science and associate director of the Keck Institute for Space Studies at Caltech, testified before a U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee on April 29 about the scientific value of JPL’s Mars 2020 mission; JPL is managed by Caltech for NASA.
Ehlmann, member of the science team and co-investigator on the rover’s Mastcam-Z and SHERLOC instrument teams, gave her testimony before the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics in a hearing titled “What Do Scientists Hope to Learn with NASA’s Mars Perseverance Rover?” She was joined by witnesses that included Michael Meyer, the lead scientist of NASA’s Mars Exploration Program; Luther Beegle of JPL, principal investigator of the Mars Perseverance Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman & Luminescence for Organics & Chemicals (SHERLOC) instrument; and Tanja Bosak, the Mars 2020 returned ....
