Vaccination Important For County Protection Against Coronavirus

Last week’s big news from Iowa Department of Public Health was the opening up of vaccines to all people ages 18 and older for Moderna and Johnson & Johnson, and 16 and older for Pfizer. It is exciting that we finally are seeing enough vaccine availability in the state to be able to take this next step. Now that there is plenty of vaccine available, it is the responsibility of our county members to take steps to getting yourself vaccinated as soon as you can.
We hear a lot in the news about herd immunity and the need to reach that in order to beat this pandemic. Because of this, I wanted to address the topic today. Herd immunity is defined in the medical community as a form of protection that occurs when people in a community become immune to a disease. I will say that last week, more than any other since the beginning of this pandemic, was a steep learning curve. Our office has been inundated with phone calls from people wanting to schedule appointments for vaccine, wanting information on the brand that we are receiving (which is Moderna), concerns for allergies and getting the vaccine, people looking to travel and wanting to schedule vaccines around the times when they are home, as well as many other questions. I am glad to hear the number of people that are interested in getting vaccinated as this will hopefully help us reach the end of this pandemic. ....

IDPH Updates COVID Vaccine Eligibility Criteria Tier 1B Vaccination Clinics on the Horizon

Greetings from Public Health,
This past week, there were many developments in the COVID vaccine effort within our state and country. Iowa’s Infectious Disease Advisory Committee completed final recommendations for the Tier 1B population on Jan. 11 to assist with prioritizing the larger 1B tier. They have identified the following priority populations to be immunized in Tier 1B:
• 75 and older
• Individuals with disabilities living in home settings who are dependent on care staff and the staff who care for them if not already immunized ....
