United Way awards $150,000 for emergency shelter Barr SIDNEY Scott Barr, president and CEO has shared, “The Shelby County United Way Board of Directors voted unanimously to award the Alpha Community Center and the Mercy Mission House $150,000 as a seed gift to start their capital campaign to bring emergency housing programming to Shelby County. The newly formed Mercy Mission House will become a partner agency of the Shelby County United Way once the funds are raised, construction completed, and shelter programming begins.” This $1.3 million project will create a men’s dorm, a women’s dorm, three family suites, and over flow capacity as needed, including a warming shelter. This project will relocate the Alpha Community Center, Holy Angels Soup Kitchen, Bridges Community Action and hold the new Mercy Mission House on one campus providing emergency shelter, soup kitchen meals, emergency food pantry, emergency rent and utility assistance, winter heat assistance, ....

The organization has raised 70% of the needed funds for the project. Part of those funds were used to purchase the property at 950 Childrens Home Road from the Full Gospel Church. While the purchase was finalized this month, the Full Gospel Church will continue to provide services from the current location for the next six months as they build their new church. Both buildings, the church and the fellowship hall were part of the purchase. ....

UW campaign surpasses $1.2 million Board approved additional allocations SIDNEY Scott Barr, president and CEO of the Shelby County United Way, has shared campaign totals from the 2020 Annual Campaign have surpassed $1.2 million and growing. “We shared at our virtual finale in early November we were approaching $800,000 in pledges with multiple large manufacturing companies still outstanding. Since that time company totals have continued to be submitted for processing and we are now comfortable projecting a campaign that will exceed $1,200,000, with the potential to continue to rise. Although no goal was established, we are still accepting donations for the 2020 campaign to close the gap on last years totals of achieving over $1,300,000. I want to thank our campaign leadership team and the many generous companies and donors that helped us achieve this level of success. Community Foundation distributes $467,000 SIDNEY More than $467,000 was distributed to 18 participating charities Friday from proceeds of Match Day, sponsored by the Community Foundation of Shelby County. The amount exceeded the 2019 total by $90,000. Match Day was held on December 1 and, after processing nearly 1,400 gifts, results were announced to each organization on Friday. The event celebrated the local foundation’s fundraising campaign on Giving Tuesday by giving away $90,000 in matching money. Matches of up to $5,000 were offered to 501(c)(3) charities that had an organization fund within the Community Foundation. The awards were not placed into the fund at the Community Foundation, but instead were given to the charities to be put to work on their projects and needs. ....
