Premium Content Subscriber only AS one Ipswich team was receiving a valuable lesson, another regional side was clicking up a gear after recent disruptions. The latest football games involving the Ipswich Knights and Western Spirit couldn t be more different. Fresh from a 2-0 FFA Cup victory over Moggill, the Knights were outclassed 6-0 by Football Queensland Premier League 1 competition favourites Brisbane City on Saturday night. While the Knights were completely shut-out at Perry Park, Spirit s players were determined to secure their second win of the season after losing 7-2 to Brisbane Knights in their previous game three weeks earlier. Western Spirit put the washout issues behind them to upstage The Gap 5-0 in their Brisbane Premier League encounter at Walton Bridge Reserve. ....
Jordan Small / Courtesy of Washington Spirit Good morning! I’m having a weird one as I write this, as the vaccine aftereffects are manifesting a little oddly. I almost fell asleep very early by my standards, and then when I went to brush my teeth, I managed to reinvigorate myself to some extent, which is why I’m writing this last night rather than early this morning. Having progressed from Capital League 1 last season, Spirit made an encouraging BPL debut by beating UQ 4-2 at Kippen Park. I was very happy with the performance the boys put out on the night, head coach Reginald Yaqub said. Whatever the game plan was, they actually stuck to it. Amalu capitalised up front on Saturday night, continuing his impressive work at the Goodna based club. He has been playing well in the pre-season as well. He s been scoring a lot of goals, Yaqub said of Amalu. ....
Premium Content Subscriber only WESTERN Spirit is hoping to reach new heights when the Ipswich club makes its Brisbane Premier League (BPL) debut this weekend. As first-time head coach Reginald Yaqub finalised his squad for Saturday night s season opener at home, he was starting his higher level aims working from the back. Co-captain Jose Fernandez has been linking well in the pre-season with another experienced and tall defender in Tyler Thor Baker. I m looking for that height domination at the back, Yaqub said, preparing for Saturday s 6pm encounter against UQ at Kippen Park. After being vice-captain last year, centre back Fernandez is sharing this year s co-captaincy duties with attacking midfielder Stefan Vrbesic. ....
