IN OUR VIEW: Pupils prosper


This editorial had to be written because of young people in our community: They have been winning so many honors that the kudos are piling up and need to be distributed.
We published three stories in less than a week about local students who, despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, have excelled in their endeavors.
• A team from Russell High School has won the Dave Ziegler Technical Award in the Student Technology Leadership Program, the first time a team in the region received the prestigious award, for its virtual reality education program. Their work includes designing an affordable VR viewing device, curricula and teacher training and support. ....

The Ashland Optimist Club recognized Ashland Blazer High School senior Cholet Mervilus as its 2021 T.P. Leach Memorial Scholarship winner during its May 6 meeting in Ashland. Mervilus is a tainer for the Ashland boys basketball team. Coach Jason Mays nominated and highly praised the senior for his work ethic both for the team and his family. Mervilus plans to attend ACTC to further his educational opportunities. Presenting the award was Secretary/Treasurer Marie Wheeler, left, and Club President Jimmy Lambert. The Ashland Optimist Club meets every Thursday at noon for lunch at the Ashland Elks Club. Potential members are welcome to attend. ....

Ashland, Russell rack up art honors


ASHLAND Several area students have placed at the Burley-Coal Regional Art Competition.
The show, typically on the Morehead State University campus, features hundreds of works in all media by regional high school students. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, the exhibit is virtual.
Winners from Russell High School are:
• Ashlee Steele won first place in paintings for “Self Portrait. She also won first place in printmaking for Untitled and second place in ceramics for Fish.
• Kole Hester won second place in drawing for “F4TH3R & 50N.” He also won honorable mention in drawing for “Psychokinetic.”
• Rosie France won second placed in mixed media for Insomnia. ....

Ashland STEM students in running for tech prize

ASHLAND A team of technology-oriented students at Ashland Blazer High School have been named semifinalists in a contest that could put tens of thousands of dollars worth of high-tech hardware on the school s shelves.
At the same time, they could be helping invalids with their contest entry, a device to help paralyzed people move themselves from wheelchair to bed and back without outside assistance.
The students — sophomore Aubree Hay and juniors Caleb Campbell, Isaac Campbell and Eric Billips — entered their device concept in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest. Solve for Tomorrow is a yearly competition sponsored by the Korean electronics giant. It pits high school and middle school teams across the country against each other to use technology to develop solutions to issues in their communities. ....
