Christian thought-leader Jen Hatmaker was getting asked constantly by nonprofit organizations around the world to throw my weight toward their work, she says.
The Austin-based author became known for the book 7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess, which was updated this spring into Simple & Free, and an HGTV show called My Big Family Renovation, which followed the renovation of an old house in Buda.
Through the show, the books and the ministry, she built an online community of mostly women, all looking to her for leadership on common causes, including how to give to charities.
By 2015, she was taking international trips to visit different organizations as an ambassador. She would return to Austin and bang a drum to get my community to care about this thing, she says. My community was operating out of compassion fatigue. ....

That was true for the Townhomes at Double Creek, a low-income housing complex where storm damage repairs forced residents to stay at hotels as they waited for the repairs to be completed.
Now, up to 44 families have received eviction notices this month due to the damage – all with about a week s notice. In the eviction notices, management also informed impacted residents that, after the seven days, they will not continue to pay for the hotels some tenants have been staying at. ....

AUSTIN, Texas – Homeowners throughout Texas are struggling to find contractors to repair storm damages since the historic freeze in February.
The increase in repair needs has created a lack of labor throughout the state, so cities are teaming up with nonprofit groups to bring volunteer contractors from across the country to help Texans fix their homes.
Orlando Chiacchio is one of those volunteers for Water Mission, which provides water aid during natural disasters. The New Yorker flew to Austin after hearing about a need for contractors on the news. ....
