A coalition of trade unionists, activist groups and students have used this year’s May Day to protest against the dismantling of Willow Grove, an 19
th century heritage building in Parramatta. Willow Grove is set to be relocated in favour of the construction of a second Powerhouse museum.
May Day, or International Workers Day, is a rally held annually to support workers and express solidarity to the labour movement. Though the event normally takes place in the city, this year it was held in Parramatta for the first time in its history. The move, proposed by the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU), aimed to express support for a green ban on Willow Grove. A green ban is a form of strike action where m ....

Gomeroi youth leader calls for climate justice

Brown is a Sydney-based Gomeroi activist, from Gamilaraay Next Generation - a grassroots collective of Gomeroi/Gamilaraay youth.
It was formed to fight the first stage of Santos’ disastrous Narrabri Gas Project. It is calling for a halt to the destruction of Gomeroi country and a just transition to publicly-owned renewable energy.
Sarah Ellyard, a nurse and member of the 70,00-strong NSW Nurses and Midwives Association Climate Change Action Reference Group, told the protest that her organisation was opposed to coal seam gas because of the damage it causes to First Nations’ peoples rights and public health.
The protest opposed the federal government’s gas-fired recovery plans, an immediate and just transition away from all fossil fuel projects and for 100% renewable energy. ....

Hundreds of people marched from Martin Place to Belmore Park in a protest demanding climate justice and jobs today.
A major focus of the rally was Indigenous sovereignty and justice, with speakers such as Uncle Bruce Shillingsworth highlighting the destruction of Indigenous land by fossil fuel corporations.
“The Murray-Darling is so important because everyone relies on water. We all drink water, and the water is taken by greed,” said Uncle Bruce, who is a Muruwari and Budjiti activist and founder of the Water for Rivers campaign. ....

Thousands ignore NSW police to protest on Invasion Day

Solidarity with First Nations peoples and taking a stand against the racism of Australia Day was high on their agenda.
The protest organisers Justice for David Dungay, Fighting In Solidarity Towards Treaties (FISTT), Indigenous Social Justice Association, Gamilaraay Next Generation, National Union of Students Anti-Racist Department and the Australian Student Environment Network had repeatedly asked to meet police to discuss the COVID-19 safety and other plans. They were ignored.
As the crowd poured into Djabargalli on an extremely hot day, the police changed tack after having earlier declared the protest was “unauthorised”. The police and government media barrage in the lead-up to the protest would have kept many others away. ....
