EcoGarden summer expansion on track for Fernie

The Community EcoGarden in Fernie will continue with expansion plans this summer after receiving confirmation of grants from the Columbia Basin Trust (Trust) and Canada Healthy Community Initiatives (CHCI).
“We’re looking forward and excited to be moving ahead with the project this summer – thank you for all of your support and to all the community volunteers that made this possible,” said Wildsight Elk Valley Branch Community Program Coordinator Dawn Deydey.
Deydey presented at Fernie’s Monday(May 25) council meeting, confirming a combined total of $122,000 from both organizations to expand the EcoGarden.
“The (Trust) through the Food Access and Recovery Grants has supported this project up to $34,000, and we were successful with $88,000 in funding from CHCI,” she said. ....

Fernie students celebrate Earth Day
To celebrate Earth Day on Wednesday, April 21, Grade 5 and 6 students from Fernie’s École Isabella Dicken Elementary School displayed upcycled creations for their school to see.
These students were challenged to create something new from items headed to the trash or recycling through Beyond Recycling’s Trash to Treasure challenge.
Students created some amazing things.We had recycled one string guitars and drums, a trampoline from old tires tubes, woven rugs and saddles pads from plastic bags, a blanket from old t-shirts, recycled paper “bean bag” chair, wind chimes from old bike parts, plant holders, a sundial, fishing hooks made from pop cans, a bench, a bookshelf, a bike rack, a coat rack, trampoline skis, pencil holders, candy dispensers, a milk jug garden and so much more. ....
