WASHINGTON There’s a role for commercial in every mission area of the U.S. Space Force, says the new service’s portfolio architect.
While commercial services have played a significant role in the military’s satellite communications and launch enterprises, the Space Force has not integrated commercial services more widely, said Col. Russell Teehan, portfolio architect at the Space and Missile Systems Center. But as the service begins looking at its future plans, it sees industry as a much bigger partner. ....

WASHINGTON The Space Force awarded four launch missions worth $385 million to SpaceX and United Launch Alliance, bringing the number of missions assigned under its heavy-lift launch contracts to seven.
Under the task orders issued March 9, ULA and SpaceX will each launch two missions. ULA was awarded $225 million to launch and integrate the USSF-112 and USSF-87 missions on its Vulcan Centaur rockets while SpaceX was awarded $160 million to launch and integrate USSF-36 and launch NROL-69 on its Falcon 9 rockets. The NROL-69 mission was awarded in partnership with the National Reconnaissance Office, which will separately fund integration for the mission. ....

WASHINGTON: Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) is wrapping up the prototype phase of its ambitious effort to create a common tool kit for routine command and control (C2) of all DoD’s satellites. SMC now aims to have an acquisition strategy ready in time for the fiscal 2023 budget chop, officials say.
“We are putting together that formal acquisition strategy,” Joshua Sullivan, SMC’s program manager for the Enterprise Ground Services (EGS) said in an interview yesterday. “I expect that we will start coordinating through the Space Force on that in the next fiscal year, so in FY22.” ....

WASHINGTON The U.S. Space Force launched an experimental research payload for the Air Force Research Laboratory, the Space and Missile Systems Center announced.
The AFRL payload for undisclosed research was placed onto a preplanned suborbital trajectory following its launch March 3 aboard a sounding rocket, which took off from NASA Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. The Terrier-Terrier-Oriole Sounding Rocket was built by the Space Vector Corp. and Kratos Space and Missile Defense, the latter of which provided integration, interface and mission planning for the launch. ....

WASHINGTON The Space and Missile Systems Center completed three virtual tests of a new anti-jamming capability for satellite communications in the final months of 2020, the center announced Feb. 17.
The mitigation and anti-jam enhancement program will provide advanced anti-jamming support for Wideband Global SATCOM, which provides satellite communications to American war fighters around the world. Once operational, the capability will allow the WGS constellation to pinpoint and mitigate attempts to jam its signal.
“The MAJE system will double the anti-jam capabilities for 16,000+ users,” Maj. Shawna Matthys, WGS-11+ program manager, said in a statement. ....
