CO Byron Parks was traveling on M 38 when he approached a bridge. There was a vehicle parked on the side of the bridge. CO Parks knew that this part of the Firesteel River was closed to fishing. As CO Parks walked down towards the river, he could see two subjects holding fishing poles. The two subjects began walking further downstream, right past a “No Trespassing” sign. CO Parks continued to follow, eventually stopping, and just watching as both subjects started fishing. Moments later the two subjects started yelling, “Get out of here” and clapping their hands. CO Parks knew the subjects could not see him, so he did not know who they were talking to. Then he heard the subjects yell,” Get out of here bear!” After about a minute the subjects stopped yelling and continued fishing. CO Parks then made contact, the subjects said there was a bear in the tree right where they were fishing, but they scared it off. CO Parks then advised them of the multiple violations. CO Parks cited one subject for fishing on a closed stream and gave verbal warnings for the recreational trespass.

COs Zach Painter and Ethen Mapes conducted an after-dark patrol on Lake Gogebic. The COs observed several tip-ups with no one around them and multiple flags up on the lighted tip-ups.  The COs waited nearby to see if anyone would check the tip-ups. After a half hour of waiting with no activity at the tip-ups, the COs followed off-road vehicle (ORV) tracks to a nearby residence and contacted two subjects. The subjects admitted that the tip-ups belonged to them. A citation was issued for fishing with lines not in immediate control.
CO Brian Lasanen was patrolling Houghton County at approximately 8:15 p.m. when a radio call went out regarding a subject who had slipped off a breakwall and into Lake Superior.  CO Lasanen and a Houghton County deputy responded to the location and met a local first responder who had just arrived. As a team, they located the subject still in the water, clinging to the side of the breakwall. The team navigated the frozen surface of the breakwall and utilized a system of ropes to safely get the subject out of the water and back onto the breakwall. The subject was then assisted to waiting emergency medical services (EMS) for transportation to the hospital for treatment of hypothermia.

CO Jared Ferguson was in northern Dickinson County when he was waved down by a civilian in a motor vehicle.  The citizen was concerned over a bear that he thought was sick and needed to be put down. CO Ferguson explained that the bear was lethargic because his hibernation was interrupted, most likely due to the logging operation taking place. CO Ferguson advised him to leave the bear alone and it will find a new place to sleep the winter away.
CO Josh Boudreaux was patrolling northwestern Marquette County when he encountered some hunters set up over large bait piles. The pair admitted they knew they had way too much bait out, which was exceeding 10 gallons each. Violations such as riding double on an ORV, no helmet on ORV, no hunting license on person, no hunter orange in blind, and no name on blind were addressed and citations were issued for litter, cutting shooting lanes on state land, and exceeding the bait limit.

Puppy Rats Out Illegal Hunter In Barry County
You ve heard the saying that a dog is man s best friend. Sometimes though, that saying comes with a price, especially if you re one who hunts illegally.
Case in point. An out of state hunter allegedly thought he could bypass all of the state of Michigan hunting laws and regulations and take a little side step when it came to hitting the woods for an illegal deer hunt. What the hunter didn t bargain for, was the careful and watchful eye of Conversation Officer Richard Cardenas and a puppy on the property who was hungry for a little venison snack.

BARRY COUNTY, MI - A curious puppy led a Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officer to an out-of-state hunter who allegedly took two deer illegally, according to a law enforcement report.
Conservation Officer Richard Cardenas was in Barry County recently when he saw an ORV with what appeared to be two hunters taking a deer back to a home. He pulled into the home’s driveway. While he waited to talk to the hunters, Cardenas said he saw a puppy walk into a pole barn on the property and come back out carrying a deer leg in its mouth, the report said.
