Infineon says can meet chip demand with help of new Austria plant

(Reuters) - German chipmaker Infineon said on Thursday it was expanding its production capacity to help address global supply shortages, and would be able to meet the needs of its customers in the long term.

Partially caused by the global health issue, which increased the demand for electronics amid more people working remotely, the chip shortage is the living proof carmakers are doing the whole thing wrong, as most of them still rely on instant shipments from suppliers.
This is what Infineon, one of the leading semiconductor companies in Europe, explained in a recent interview, adding that carmakers must change their strategy and take the risk of holding inventory.
In other words, they can no longer rely on instant purchases from chip suppliers but actually order more components in advance and then create an inventory that would guarantee uninterrupted production. ....

Infineon's new Austrian plant can equip 25 mln electric vehicles a year - CEO

Feb 25 (Reuters) - German chipmaker Infineon is expanding production capacity and with the early opening of its new plant in Villach, Austria this year will be able to meet its customers’ long-term needs, CEO Reinhard Ploss said on Thursday.
Once fully operational, Villach will be capable of producing enough power semiconductors each year to equip the drive trains of 25 million electric vehicles, Ploss said in remarks prepared for delivery at Infineon’s annual shareholders meeting. (Reporting by Douglas Busvine) ....
