Despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, overall property values in Douglas County increased in 2021. However, some areas saw significant declines, including the lodging industry and downtown businesses.
According to a report from County Appraiser Steven Miles, the property values throughout Douglas County increased by roughly 4% over the last year.
The County Commission during its meeting on Wednesday will discuss the values and the appraiser’s work to establish the figures. The discussion is for information purposes, and the commission is not expected to take any action related to the report. ....

The Douglas County Commission will soon get its first look at a new local criminal justice program that aims to divert suspects in criminal cases away from incarceration.
The County Commission on Wednesday will meet with Douglas County district attorney’s office staff during a work session to discuss the diversion program.
According to a description provided to the commissioners, the new program’s goals include improving “quality of life” for participants through community services, increasing court efficiency by decreasing the case load processed by the district court and reducing the number of inmates housed in the Douglas County Jail. ....

Though LMH Health hasn’t received Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine yet, the Lawrence hospital is anticipating that it will be able to vaccinate between 200 and 300 people a day at its new drive-thru vaccination center.
Christina Crowley, director of pharmacy at LMH Health, spoke to the Journal-World Tuesday morning at the site of the new drive-thru on the northwest corner of the hospital’s campus. Crowley said that the date and time of vaccine arrival at LMH Health is still unknown, but that she was told to expect a call with more information either Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday. ....
