School board candidate profile: Moira Lang

ITHACA, NY Moira Lang is a former teacher who retired in June 2014 and joined the Board of Education a year later. She spent 35 years as a secondary English teacher, 25 of those at Ithaca High School. Her long experience with the Ithaca City School District extends beyond her own experience â her daughter and six nieces all attended Ithaca schools and her daughter has been an English teacher at Lehman Alternative Community School for the past decade.
While she was a teacher, Lang served on numerous committees and was a participant in and leader of diverse projects including the ICSD Secondary Language Arts Curriculum Committee, the Ithaca Writing Project and the IHS WISE Program. She worked at IHS until 2010 and spent her final four years teaching at Robert College of Istanbul, Turkey.Â ....

ITHACA, NY Ann Reichlin is seeking her third term on the Board of Education, and said her motivations for running now are similar as the ones that motivated her six years ago.Â
âI am passionate about public education and I would like to contribute back to the district that gave my two kids such a solid educational foundation,â she said. âMy first run for school board was also inspired by my advocacy as a parent and as a founding member of a non-dormant grassroots parents group â S.O.S. ITHACA, NY Nicole LaFave was born and raised in Harlem, New York and came to Ithaca to earn her bachelorâs degree in sociology with a concentration in juvenile criminal studies and race and ethnic relations, and minor in Africana studies. While studying at the Center for Culture, Race and Ethnicity, she found her passion for exploring race relations in the United States and began exploring strategies for denouncing oppressive systems.
She decided to stay in Ithaca after college because she believed the city had the power and ambition to cultivate a space where true social change is possible and sustainable. She is a former member of the Ithaca City Community Police Board and is a co-founding member of Black Lives Matter Ithaca and is engaged in several community initiatives around social justice and equity. LaFave is currently the assistant director of diversity alumni programs at Cornell University. ....

ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) Ithaca City School District’s superintendent is resigning.
Doctor Luvelle Brown announced his decision during last evening’s Board of Education meeting. Brown’s accepted a job with Discovery Education. Brown has led the district for the last 10 years and was named New York State Superintendent of the Year in 2017. Brown’s resignation is effective February 1st.
The district says Brown will provide consultation through the remainder of the school year. Brown calls his decision to step down “very difficult.” Deputy Superintendent Lily Talcott will likely be named interim superintendent next month.
