Francine Root Petersen

Francine Root Petersen, of Watertown, daughter of the late Leonard and Madolyn (Salotto) Root, passed away on June 14, 2021 at Hospice of Jefferson County at the Ellis Farm.
She is survived by sons, James J. Petersen of Watertown and Leonard R. Petersen of Brookville, FL., sisters Roxanne (Philip) Pratt of Goose Bay, NY and Georgia A. Root of Glen Allen, VA., a daughter-in-law, Julee K. Petersen, Watertown, NY, many cousins, nephews and great nephews, a special family friend who is more like a son, Teddy Sutton. She was predeceased by her beloved son Michael John in 1963 and her constant companion, her Black Labrador Retriever, Seamus. ....

Bravo Italiano Festival returning this summer, Watertown agrees to help with fee

WATERTOWN â Festival-goers will again be able to enjoy Italian dishes, cannoli and other desserts, a bocce ball tournament and the Miss Italia contest as the 36th annual Bravo Italiano Festival is set to return this summer.
Last yearâs festival was lost to the COVID-19 pandemic but will return at the Watertown Municipal Arena from Aug. 27 to 29.
On Monday night, the City Council informally agreed to lower the fee for the use of the arena for the event from $3,500 to $2,500. The Italian American Civic Association puts on the festival.
In April, Julian Alteri, chairman of the festival, sent a letter to the city seeking a reduction in fees for this yearâs event, blaming âthe fiscal impact of the pandemic on our club and its inability to schedule and host events.â ....

Michelle Capone announces run for Watertown City Council seat

WATERTOWN â Another candidate has come forward to run for the four-year seat on City Council.
Michelle L. Capone, whoâs actively involved in several organizations, confirmed Wednesday sheâs running for council. She picked up her petitions Wednesday afternoon from the Jefferson County Board of Elections.
Ms. Capone is the director of regional development for the Development Authority of New York and has worked at DANC for 21 years, and also serves as a volunteer on numerous boards of other organizations. Sheâs focused her efforts on economic development in the north country, she said.
âI am passionate about our community and bring to the table a great deal of knowledge and experience that I believe would help the city reach its full potential,â she said in a news release Wednesday. âIn the weeks to come, I look forward to sharing my vision for the future with residents and of course, listening to their thoughts on how together, we can ....
