The total import by 8 pepper-consuming countries was recorded at 15,503 tonnes towards the end of 2020
Global pepper production in the last 10 years registered a 72 per cent rise at 561,500 tonnes against 234,418 tonnes in 2010. However, the increase in the last one year was 1 per cent at 4,748 tonnes compared to 2019.
Vietnam contributed to 43 per cent of the global production. Brazil surpassed Indonesia as the second-largest pepper producer with 80,000 tonnes in 2019. Brazil’s increase of production could be attributed to the result of the expansion of plantations in Espirito Santos, said Hoang Thi Lien, Executive Director, International Pepper Community. ....

Centre, Spices Board to popularise health benefits of spices abroad
Hoang Thi Lien, Executive Director, International Pepper Community, Indonesia, has said that India is the only country which is part of the International Pepper Community that has been contributing well to the export of value-added pepper products.
Delivering the keynote address at the international symposium on spices organised by the Indian Society for Spices, she said though the country produced 60,000 metric tonnes of pepper, it also imported over 24,000 metric tonnes, as value-added products are given thrust.
D. Sathiyan, Secretary, Spices Board, also stressed the scope of value-addition for improving spices export. According to him, value-added spice products contribute 51% of the total spice export from the country. ....

India’s spices production on a steady rise: Director General, ICAR

India s spices production along with other horticultural crops is witnessing a steady increase, enabling the country to garner $3 billion revenue annually, Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education & Director General of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), has said.
The country is producing about 9 million tonnes of spices annually and he lauded the R&D activities in the spices sector for driving the growth in production, processing, marketing, value addition and exports.
Mohapatra was speaking at the virtual event of the inaugural session of the four-day international symposium Symsac X, hosted by the Indian Society for Spices. ....

The Indian Society for Spices (ISS) at the Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) will give away Sugandha Bharathi and Sugandhasree awards during SYMSAC X 2021, an international symposium on Spices and Aromatic Crops.
PN Ravindran, renowned plant breeder, author and writer, best known for his contributions in the field of spices research, development and documentation has been selected for the Sugandha Bharathi award.
He is the former director and project coordinator of IISR and a distinguished scientist who has authored spices-related books for many international publishers. ....
