Directorate of Economics, Statistics celebrates Statistics Day; J&K among top 10 states, UTs in terms of food security and nutrition

Pertinently, Jammu & Kashmir is among top 10 states and UTs in terms of food security and nutrition and efforts are being made to further improve outreach of the programmes initiated by the government in this regard.
During the programme, presentations on theme of the Day were given by the known personalities in the field of Statistics from the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation and National Statistical Institute.
Later, the winners of Professor P.C. Mahalanobis National Award in Official Statistics, 2021, Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis National Award for Young Statistician, 2021 and Spot Essay writing Competition, 2021were felicitated. ....

Deaths during the second wave could be around 7 lakh, scientists estimate
Underreporting of cases and mortality were more acute in India during the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic compared to the first wave, and close to 7 lakh people died during the current surge till May 15 compared to nearly 1.16 lakh deaths reported, according to a mathematical model proposed by a team of researchers from Union of Michigan and the Indian Statistical Institute.

Their modelling studies suggested that India would have underreported cases by nearly 26.73 times and deaths by 5.77 times during the latest surge which commenced in March. In comparison, the underreporting of cases and mortality during the first wave was estimated to be 11.11 times and 3.56 times.
