The government, which had written to WhatsApp last month to withdraw the proposed changes to its privacy rules and had sought clarifications on a set of queries from it, told the court that the companies can t share data of users which must be protected.
WhatsApp and Facebook refuted allegations of data sharing.
Senior lawyer Kapil Sibal, who appeared for WhatsApp, told the court that the same WhatsApp policy would be applicable everywhere except in the European Union which is governed by a special law.
The matter was concerning an application filed by Karmanya Singh Sareen and Shreya Sethi in their pending case before a constitution bench, where WhatsApp s 2016 user policy was challenged. ....
