The Portland City Council next week is expected to vote on whether to consolidate the city’s social services and public health divisions in one building on Forest Avenue.
If the relocation of the divisions from four locations across the city to a 37,000-square-foot building at 39 Forest Ave. is approved May 17, the city would enter into a 20-year lease with property owner 39 LLC beginning June 1. The city would be charged $277,500 a year, or $23,125 rent per month, for the space. The rent would increase by 1% and cap out at $335,250 in 2040-2041, the last year of the lease. ....

Portland officials have unveiled a plan to consolidate social services and public health programs, including clinical services offered at India Street, under one roof in a new downtown location.
The plan, laid out in a memo to a City Council committee that oversees the department, would consolidate programming and staff at four locations to 39 Forest Ave., an office building between Congress Street and Cumberland Avenue.
Kristen Dow, the city’s health and human services director, said the space will be better for both staff and clients, who often utilize multiple city programs and multiple locations. Those services would be under one roof. ....

Portland police issued a warning Tuesday about pills that look like prescription pain medication but contain fentanyl and may have caused a fatal overdose.
An unresponsive woman was found Sunday in a car outside Maine Medical Center, according to police. Doctors were unable to revive her and she was pronounced dead. People who were with the woman said she had taken a “blue pill” before she became unresponsive.
Investigators said there has been an increase in the circulation of pills that appear to be prescription 30 mg oxycodone tablets, but they also contain fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid with effects similar to heroin. It is often made illegally and sold with heroin or cocaine, and it is a leading cause of fatal drug overdoses in Maine. ....
