The DNR has estimated dollar values for some of the annual benefits wetlands provide: 
●  $1.8 billion in water storage, 
●  $850 million in erosion prevention, 
●  $202 million in water purification, and 
●  support for Indiana’s multi-billion dollar outdoor recreation, hunting, and fishing industries5. 
The water storage and water quality functions of wetlands can be replaced by building stormwater infrastructure, but at a substantial cost, and without wildlife, recreation, air quality, and climate benefits. EPA data on the cost of stormwater infrastructure, adjusted to 2021 dollars, show that the least expensive option costs over $86,000 per acre of wetland being replaced6. Preserving existing wetlands saves these construction costs and provides the most cost-effective stormwater management available.  ....

Over the past 10 years, Hans Heintzelman and Charles Mason have worked to plant 1,000 trees a year around Muncie.
Charles Mason loves trees. The retired Episcopal priest, formerly of Grace Church in Muncie, has been active purchasing and planting trees throughout Delaware County. Rev. Mason is also a member of the Indiana Green Party. He and our current Republican mayor of Muncie, Dan Ridenour, have found common ground on the subject of trees. Mayor Ridenour has made it a goal of his administration to plant 1,000 trees in Muncie.
When I proposed this article to Mayor Ridenour, and the connection that I was going to  make with Rev. Mason and his affiliation with the Green Party, the mayor’s response revealed a family connection: “My father was a member of the Green Party,” he replied.
