Multi-state conservation project awarded nearly $8 million for Western Lake Erie Basin

LANSING, MI - Recently, the United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS) announced that a multi-state conservation program led by Indiana and including the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development as a key partner received $7,780,799 to protect natural resources, enhance soil health, improve water quality, and support landowners in the Western Lake Erin Basin (WLEB) region.
This is a tremendous opportunity to expand and accelerate the work our states have been doing to preserve and protect our fresh water, which has been a top priority of Governor Whitmer s administration since day one, said ....

ISDA launches new statewide dairy strategy

ENCOURAGE INDUSTRY: The Indiana State Department of Agriculture recently launched an updated strategic plan to encourage growth of the dairy industry in Indiana.
Dairy producers and group leaders hail it as another step forward.
Brian Rexing of Fort Branch is proud to represent dairy farmers on the board of the co-op where he sells his milk, and to represent dairy farmers in general. “As dairy farmers, we touch consumers three times each day,” he says. “We’re there when they pour milk on their cereal in the morning, when they slap a piece of cheese on their hamburger at lunch and when they use butter on their baked potato in the evening. Sometimes, we’re there again when they eat a bowl of ice cream before going to bed at night.” ....

Indiana Soybean Alliance Welcomes Two New Farmers to Board of Directors


Two new Hoosier farmers have taken a seat at the board table for the Indiana Soybean Alliance (ISA). Steve Phares of Albion, Ind., and Kevin Kelley of Brookston, Ind., joined six incumbents elected to the ISA board.
ISA is also welcoming two new non-voting members in 2021.  Purdue professor Dr. Bernie Engel replaces the retiring Dr. Marshall Martin as the board’s liaison from Purdue. And, John O’Donnell, ADM Commercial Manager with the Frankfort Oilseed Processing plant, was added as an additional ex-officio member.
Phares takes the position left by John Emmert, who passed away on Nov. 26, 2020, in ISA District 2. Emmert had planned to retire from the ISA board this year. C.J. Chalfant of Hartford City, Ind. was re-elected as a District 2 representative. The counties in District 2 include Adams, Allen, Blackford, DeKalb, Delaware, Grant, Henry, Huntington, Jay, LaGrange, Madison, Noble, Randolph, Steuben, Wayne, Wells and Whitley. ....
