(Paoli, Ind.) - Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch today joined Indiana electric cooperative leaders and community and industry partners from southern Indiana to discuss broadband initiatives. The group discussed the impact cooperatives have on closing the rural digital divide, the different ways cooperatives are working to provide this essential service and the stories of how it s impacting their communities.

It s more evident now than ever how fast, reliable internet is no longer a luxury but a necessity for modern life, Crouch said. Several Indiana cooperatives are taking significant steps to advance the availability of affordable and reliable high-speed internet in their communities, and I m thrilled to hear the stories about how it s improving the quality of life of Hoosiers.” ....

Manchester to rehab chime bells | Schools | The Journal Gazette

An iconic fixture on Manchester University s campus will be removed next month for restoration so it can sound again for its 100th anniversary next year.
The Verdin Co. of Cincinnati is tasked with the Manchester Chime project, which includes removal of 10 bronze bells from the Administration Building tower Aug. 9 to 11, the university said in a news release.
Along with refurbishing the bells, which range in weight from 550 to 2,650 pounds, work includes creating four bells and installing a new open bell tower next spring or summer in the middle of the Manchester University Mall, the release said.
Alumni and others raised $8,700 in the early 1920s to buy the original chime, and its players – mostly students – pushed hand levers in a drafty room directly below the bells, even in winter, the release said. ....

Tree trimming can present special hazards

Maintaining trees can come with special hazards, however, according to Indiana Electric Cooperatives.
âWe know hiring professionals to do some of these tasks goes against that independent streak some of our consumers have,â said John Gasstrom, CEO of Indiana Electric Cooperatives. âTrimming and removing trees can be dangerous and even deadly. Before attempting any work yourself, please understand the dangers.â
The most common types of serious tree trimming accidents are electrocution, falling, being struck or overestimating abilities.
Gasstrom warns people can be seriously injured or killed by coming into contact with an electric line.
Itâs easy to misjudge the height of a tree or length of a branch, he said. If thereâs a chance power lines might be involved at all, always call your electric utility first and its experts will come out and advise you. ....
