Drone detection system keeping an eye on the skies at the Ottawa Airport

OTTAWA
The Ottawa International Airport s new drone detection system identified more than 250 drones flying in illegal airspace near the airport this spring.
The airport has partnered with Indro Robotics, QinetiQ and NAV Canada to pioneer a drone detection pilot program to monitor the airspace around the Ottawa International Airport. The area is a no-fly zone for drones.
What we are seeing and reporting to Transport Canada is a very disturbing trend that requires a quick response to reverse the number of drone operators flying in restricted areas, said Mark Laroche, President of the Ottawa International Airport about the early results of the pilot project. ....

The skies above B.C. ports may look a little different in the coming years as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) begin tapping Canada’s nascent 5G networks, according to Philip Reece.
“Imagine Vancouver, for example – you’ve got the big harbour there. Port authorities could simply dispatch a couple of drones from their roof early in the day, they would map out the whole harbour, they’d count the boats that were in the harbor, report back to the engineer or the harbormaster,” said the CEO of West Coast drone developer InDro Robotics Inc. ....

Canada’s first unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) flights over a 5G network took place at UBC last week, showcasing some of the future potential applications of 5G-enabled autonomous flight.
Two UAVs standard quad models fitted out with a 5G signal transmitter receiver were put through their paces by Vancouver drone R&D company InDro Robotics using UBC’s 5G network, installed by Rogers as part of a multiyear collaboration to pursue 5G research.
The drones performed precise flight manoeuvres relying on the 5G network alone, without additional navigation from ground operators, and completed tasks such as picking up and dropping off a box containing medical first-aid supplies at a designated location. Drones usually communicate using radio frequencies, with 5G significantly enhancing their capabilities. ....
