The Catholic Church and rights activists have condemned Indonesia’s Supreme Court for invalidating a recent ministerial decree banning state schools from interfering in the religious beliefs of students and teachers, saying the move will encourage discrimination and intolerance in the education system.
The decree was issued by three ministers in February following an outcry over a state vocational senior high school in Padang, West Sumatra province, ordering all female students to wear a hijab, regardless of their religion. ....

Indonesia has sentenced nearly 100 people to death over Zoom and other internet video applications over the past year, according to a report published this week by Amnesty International.
“Since early last year, almost 100 inmates have been condemned to die in Indonesia by judges they could only see on a television monitor,” Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported on April 22, citing Amnesty International’s annual capital punishment report, published on April 21.
Indonesia’s supreme court last spring ordered most in-person trials should be held online to prevent the spread of the Chinese coronavirus. The mandate applied to murder and drug trafficking cases, which can carry the death penalty in Indonesia. ....

Indonesia has sentenced several prisoners to death over Zoom and other video apps during the coronavirus pandemic in what critics say is an “inhumane” insult to those facing the firing squad.
The Southeast Asian nation turned to virtual court hearings as COVID-19 restrictions shut down most in-person trials, including murder and drug trafficking cases, which can carry the death penalty.
