Watch: top of £4,500 at NI Charolais club sale in Clogher

The sale was conducted ringside and also online using the MartBids app.
The Northern Ireland Charolais club held a successful first outing at Clogher Valley Livestock Producers Mart on Friday night.
The venue has been attracting some very big sales of commercial cattle in recent times and its central location in suckler country means it’s the perfect fit for pedigree sales.
Topping the trade on the night were the Devine brothers from Strabane in Co Tyrone.
Their strong July 2019-born Brownhill Paddyrabbit is by Mullaghbane Topline, a son of Donnally New, and out of a Shaen Topper cow.
After a bidding frenzy from both online and ringside bidders, he was knocked down at £4,500. ....

Dairy Management: breeding, synchronising heifers and feeding cows

Breeding: There seems to be a lot of interest in synchronisation programmes for heifers this year.
Using hormones reduces the amount of heat detection required and front-loads the majority of heifers to calve at the start of the calving season.
There are lots of variations of synchrony programmes. The target should be to get 65% to 70% of heifers in calf to the first service.
The lowest-cost approach is to watch heifers for seven days and then inject with prostaglandin (PG) any heifers not served and wait for them to come into heat. Some farmers are using a double shot of PG. ....

Farmer Writes: farmers need to meet challenges head on

Dairy farmer Bill O Keeffe on his farm in Kilkenny.
Dairy farm families in the southeast are welcoming the news this week that the High Court has rejected the challenge to the Kilkenny cheese development at Belview, Co Kilkenny. Hopefully this project can move forward now through the second half of 2021 and help to secure the incomes of thousands of families across the region.
With no more delays, we could have this plant up and running for peak milk in 2024 and reduce the impact of the peak supply restrictions introduced by Glanbia last month.
These restrictions imposed by Glanbia indicate that this plant is needed for current cow numbers in the country, rather than an increase in cow numbers in the future. Hopefully farmers get the opportunity to engage in some meaningful dialogue with An Taisce on the best route forward for the Irish dairy industry and for the farmers involved in that industry, before any more objections are lodged with our legal system. ....
