'Underwater Gallery Nilwella' declared open on the southern coast - Hiru News - Srilanka's Number One News Portal, Most visited website in Sri Lanka

Sunday, 11 April 2021 - 17:38
Minister of Youth & Sports, Honorable Namal Rajapaksa declared open the ‘Underwater Gallery Nilwella’ at Nilwella beach yesterday (10th April 2021).
Built with the contribution of the Sri Lanka Navy, this latest addition in the southern coast of Nilwella, would from here on attract more local and foreign holidaymakers towards this popular tourist destination.
The project had been set in motion after taking a wide array of matters into consideration. Among them; prevention of harmful effects on marine animals, plants and corals due to natural and human activities, protection of the marine ecosystem, creation of an artificial fish breeding environment, provision of artificial substrates for coral reefing and offering a magnificent site for scuba divers were factored. ....

Dairy Management: breeding, fertiliser for silage ground and lime

Fertiliser: With the fine weather, many farmers are thinking of fertilising silage ground.
In terms of nitrogen (N), the Teagasc advice is that a good crop of first-cut silage will require 100 units per acre and this should be spread at least 50 days before cutting.
Therefore, ground destined to be cut in late May will need N now. About 25% of the N applied to date will still be available. So if 30 units/acre has been spread for grazing, around eight units/acre should still be available.
Equally, if slurry was spread before now at a rate of say 2,500gallons/acre, then around five units/acre should still be available. I think there is scope to reduce N on silage ground. Spreading 80 units/acre is a 20% saving on N and should not impact much on yield. ....

Top tips for successful use of sexed semen

SHARING OPTIONS:
More beef calves on the ground and less dairy bull calves should be the aim of sexed semen
The future prospects for sexed semen use in Ireland got a boost recently with the news that Teagasc and AI companies are setting up a new sexing lab. While it won’t be ready for this spring, it should be ready for the 2022 breeding season.
Last year was probably the first time that dairy farmers in Ireland used sexed semen in good numbers. Figures from the ICBF suggest that upwards of 30,000 to 40,000 inseminations of sexed straws were used last year, which represents about 3-4% of all inseminations, so it is still relatively niche. ....

Scottish prices: farmers paid £6.45/kg for hoggets, lamb legs £5.50/kg in shops

This week, Scottish legs of lamb are selling for £5.50/kg in supermarkets while farmers are paid up to £6.45/kg for the whole carcase.
Clearly, retailers have calculated that losing money on every leg of lamb is worth it if customers buy the rest of their Easter shopping in their store.
Scottish abattoirs are paying farmers £6.30 to £6.45/kg for R grading hoggets up to 21kg, which is unchanged.
The Monday and Tuesday live sales didn’t move much this week, with prices around £2.65-£2.90/kg for medium weight hoggets.
Across Scotland, the average for the week ending 27 March was £2.76/kg, down 9p/kg for medium weight hoggets. ....

Options for synchronising heats in dairy stock

Synchronisation can help to tighten up the calving pattern of heifers. \ Donal O Leary
As most livestock farmers will be aware, a healthy cow or a post pubertal heifer will have a heat (oestrus) every 21 days or so. I say “or so” because the actual normal range is 18 to 24 days.
On the laws of probability, if you have 100 females in a group, between four and five will come into heat every day over the 21-day cycle.
The purpose of a synchronisation programme is two-fold. Firstly it condenses the animal’s naturally occurring heats into a shorter period and, secondly, hormone treatment can bring forward a heat and get an animal back cycling sooner. ....
