Why it matters: Intel s latest earnings report is the last with Bob Swan at the helm and looks surprisingly positive given the company s recent manufacturing hurdles. Incoming CEO Pat Gelsinger says the company is on track to deliver its first 7 nm chips in 2023 but at the same time acknowledged the need to outsource some of its chip manufacturing while it catches up.
Intel s latest earnings report is in, and it looks like the company made a record $77.9 billion in revenue in 2020, which an 8 percent year-over-year increase compared to its 2019 performance. At the same time, Intel says it generated a profit of $20.9 billion and paid $19.8 billion to shareholders. ....

Intel’s new CEO is already putting his own stamp on the company, even if he doesn’t formally take power until February 15. News broke today that Intel will rehire former Intel Senior Fellow Glenn Hinton to work on an “exciting high-performance CPU project.”
Hinton spent 35 years with Intel and led development on the Pentium Pro (P6) microarchitecture, the Pentium 4 microarchitecture, and Nehalem. He also worked on Intel’s i960 project. Nehalem is what he’s best known for. ....

MARKETWATCH FIRST TAKE
Pat Gelsinger doesn’t officially start his new job until Feb. 15, but the incoming Intel Corp. chief executive has already begun rallying the troops.
On Thursday’s fourth-quarter earnings conference call with Wall Street, Gelsinger sat in virtually with the CEO he is replacing, Bob Swan, and gave some glimpses of his strategy for the semiconductor giant and its current manufacturing issues. The general rallying cry: We are going to do things the Intel way.
The most important announcement was the one the chip world had been anxiously anticipating: Intel’s manufacturing plans. As many had been predicting, given Gelsinger’s previous tenure at the company, Intel will stick with what it has always known by keeping most of its manufacturing in-house. Intel will continue to outsource some products to contract manufacturers like T ....

New Intel CEO Making Waves: Rehiring Retired CPU Architects

We’re following the state of play with Intel’s new CEO, Pat Gelsinger, very closely. Even as an Intel employee for 30 years, rising to the rank of CTO, then taking 12 years away from the company, his arrival has been met with praise across the spectrum given his background and previous successes. He isn’t even set to take his new role until February 15
th, however his return is already causing a stir with Intel’s current R&D teams.
News in the last 24 hours, based on public statements, states that former Intel Senior Fellow Glenn Hinton, who lists being the lead architect of Intel’s Nehalem CPU core in his list of achievements, is coming out of retirement to re-join the company. (The other lead architect of Nehalem are Ronak Singhal and Per Hammerlund - Ronak is still at Intel, working on next-gen processors, while Per has been at Apple for five years.) ....
