Borderview Christian welcomes new youth, children's director


ELIZABETHTON — Borderview Christian Church, 1338 Bristol Highway, has named Sallie Biles as the church’s new youth and children’s director.
Biles joined the ministry staff this month. She was born and raised in Johnson City and attended Science Hill High School, East Tennessee State University, and Emmanuel Christian Seminary at Milligan University. Sallie has a bachelor’s degree in social work as well as a master’s in divinity.
Prior to coming to Borderview, Biles served as a social worker and the food programs director at Good Samaritan Ministries. In addition, she also completed an internship at the Department of Veterans Affairs in the chaplaincy department. ....

Dressed entirely in pastoral black and sitting at a long, mahogany-colored desk in her sunlit office on a mid-December Sunday afternoon, Rev. Dr. Joanne Walker Flowers has an undeniably captivating presence about her. 
She is flanked on one side by vibrant poinsettias supplying Christmas cheer. On the other stands a coat rack that holds her formal pastor’s vestments and a dark blue cap with insignia denoting that she had achieved the rank of commander when she retired from the U.S. Navy years ago. She jokes that she keeps the cap in a prominent spot to remind anyone who might doubt her capabilities as a woman that she does not tolerate such nonsense. ....

Thomas Edward Stokes, Jr., 78, passed peacefully to join his loved ones in the sight of the Lord on Wednesday, December 23, 2020. Thomas was a long-time resident of Northeast Tennessee. He was born in Canton, Ohio to the late Thomas Edward and Elsie Mae (Groves) Stokes on October 17, 1942.
Thomas was a gentle man with a servant’s heart. He was a loving, caring, and humorous husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend to all who knew him. He was a member of Grandview Christian Church where he served as an elder for many years. He loved reading, teaching, ministering to others, but most importantly he loved to spend time with his family. ....
