Women's History Month Discussion Will 'Unpack' Black Feminism


The online panel discussion features:
Carolette Norwood, Ph.D., associate professor of sociology and assistant department head of the Department of Women s, Gender and Sexuality Studies and director of the social justice program at the University of Cincinnati.
Djanna Hill, Ed.D., chairperson of the Department of Community and Social Justice Studies and professor of teacher education at William Paterson University.
Treva Lindsey, Ph.D., associate professor of women s, gender and sexuality studies at The Ohio State University.
Black women and feminist-identified persons have been doing this social justice work without acknowledgement for far too long, Norwood tells WVXU. One of the reasons this discussion is important is because it gives recognition; it calls the names of Black women who have been and who are currently in the trenches doing socially just advocacy work. ....

Author Mikki Kendall to deliver Women in America Lecture at Simpson College

Mikki Kendall, author of “Hood Feminism: Notes From the Women That a Movement Forgot,” will deliver the annual Women in America Lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday. The virtual event is free and open to the public via Zoom; pre-registration is required and available online. “Hood Feminism” features a collection of essays arguing that the modern feminist movement has failed to address the needs of all but a few women. The book received the Chicago Review of Books Award and was named a best book of the year by BBC, Time magazine and Bustle magazine. The Women in America Lecture was created in 1990 as a keynote event for Women’s History Month at Simpson College; a complete schedule of events is available at www.simpson.edu/WHM2021. ....

Raie Gessesse
At 22, Raie Gessesse isn t waiting to inspire change. Appointed by former Gov. Mark Dayton, she served as a member of the first-ever Young Women s Cabinet, working to elevate the voices of future female leaders, and received a $2,500 microgrant to invest in her vision as a Women s Foundation of Minnesota Innovator. She currently trains young women to run for office as Midwest Program Manager for IGNITE National, and aspires to run for office herself someday. She graduated in May from Hamline University with a double major in public health and political science, and hopes to begin law and public policy school this fall. Gessesse is Minnesota-born, but her story begins in a different place. ....
