The average claim size is at ₹1.40 lakh, with some going as high as ₹30 lakh
Health insurers are reporting a flood of Covid-related claims from across the country, including rural regions, reflecting the spread of the pandemic.
Rapid rise
Till last month, Covid claims had been mainly from urban areas of Delhi, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradhesh, Chhattisgarh, and Bihar as also some from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
“However, we now see a surge in claims from rural areas, too, in line with the rapid surge of the Covid-19 pandemic across regions,” Sanjay Datta, Chief-Underwriting, Claims and Reinsurance, ICICI Lombard GIC, told ....

CHENNAI:  If Covid-19 infections continue to rise unabated, insurance companies may be forced to hike their premiums by as much as 15 per cent to deal with the parallely increasing number of Covid-related claims.  Industry executives have noted over the past week that the rate of claim settlements are unsustainable for insurers unless the rate of growth in Covid-19 cases is arrested.  ....

Health insurance companies get over 900K Covid-19 claims, settle 84%


Health insurance companies are seeing the number of Covid-19-related claims rising, even as the pace of growth has slowed since the August-December period.
As of February 25, general and standalone health insu­r­ers have received 908,849 Covid-related claims, amounting to Rs 13,752.41 crore, according to the data compiled by General Insurance Council, which is not publicly available.
They have settled 761,676 claims, amounting to Rs 7,141.33 crore, almost 15 per cent of the health premiums the insurers have collected till January.
Overall, the insurers have settled almost 84 per cent of the claims in terms of the number of claims, and 52 per cent in terms of the amount of claims. ....
