Average ticket size of health claims for Covid patients up 20-50% in second wave of the pandemic | India News

File photo
CHENNAI: Even as the period of hospitalization halved in the second wave of the pandemic, the average ticket size of health claims for Covid patients increased from 20 to 50%, as compared to the peak of the first wave in 2020.
Director of underwriting, products and claims at Max Bupa Health Insurance, Bhabatosh Mishra says that we saw the average ticket size of claims go up from Rs 1.3 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh. "The period of hospitalization has declined from an average of 14 days to 7-8 days in the last few months," he said.
"Surge in the bill size of Covid-19 treatment is largely due to hospitals charging separately for oxygen cylinders and equipment used in the ICU. Don’t understand why they should charge for the ICU equipment separately? The use of high-priced drugs has further led to a high cost, and therefore a higher claim size," Mishra told TOI.

During the novel coronavirus pandemic, on average an insured Indian has been paying at least 40% of the covid-related medical expenses from their own pocket. In other words, health insurance policies have not been fully paying for the medical expenses incurred by people due to the virus.
According to General Insurance Council of India data, from since beginning of the covid 19 pandemic last year till May 14, 2021, on average an insured Indian was paying around 40% of the covid treatment costs from his/her own pocket with average payment of Rs 95,622 against a claim size of Rs 1.54 lakh. A total of 14.82 lakh Covid-19 claims worth Rs 23,000 crore were reported during this period out of which only 12.33 lakh (83%) claims worth Rs 11,700 crore (51%) were settled by insurers since the pandemic.

Vaccinated patients hospitalised for Covid discharged two days earlier than others: Study

People vaccinated against Covid-19 and yet hospitalised with the infection are likely to require shorter hospital stays, face significantly reduced need for intensive care unit support and run up lower hospital bills, a nationwide study of health insurance claims has suggested.
The study has found that vaccinated patients hospitalised for Covid-19 were discharged two days earlier than others, and that the fully vaccinated among them had a 66 per cent lower risk of needing ICU support. Also, the average hospital bill of the vaccinated patients was Rs 60,000 lower than that of unvaccinated patients.

“Our findings bolster the evidence for how vaccination benefits individuals,” said Prakash Subbarayan, MD of Star Health Insurance, a Chennai-based company that has handled over 300,000 Covid-related claims over the past year.
