‘It’s about time’: Lehigh Valley jails to start vaccinating inmates against COVID

Northampton County Prison and Lehigh County Jail will start vaccinating inmates later this month against COVID-19.
Prime Care Medical, the healthcare provider at both facilities, plans to hold a vaccine clinic for inmates and prison staff on May 12 in Northampton and May 14 in Lehigh, the counties announced Tuesday.
The state Department of Health will deliver either the Moderna or the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, and Prime Care Medical staff will administer the shots.
Use of the Johnson & Johnson shot was paused following six cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot in individuals, but that was lifted April 23 by the FDA and CDC following a safety review. ....

Lehigh County Jail officer who died from COVID remembered for his ’bright smile and positivity’

The director of Lehigh County corrections on Thursday paid homage to the county jail’s first corrections officer to die from COVID-19.
Gary Dean, 30, was a dedicated member of the jail staff and a true asset, Director Janine Donate said in a prepared statement.
Dean, who lived in Upper Nazareth Township, was pronounced dead on Tuesday at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg, the Lehigh County coroner’s office said.
“(Dean’s) professional demeanor, bright smile, and positivity was uplifting and encouraging to everyone around him. We extend our most sincere condolences to his family and friends as we grieve this incredible loss,” Donate said. ....
