WITHOUT CONTINUED investment in infectious disease research in livestock, Scotland will not be able to call on animal health expertise in the event of future biological challenges.
The Moredun Research Institute played an invaluable role in the Covid-19 effort, lending both its expertise and facilities – however its funding avenues are drying up and it could soon be facing difficult decisions over which disease research should be placed on the backburner.
Moredun currently receives £5,800,000 in annual support from the Scottish Government – 55% of its total funding – a pot which has already been reduced by around 40% since 2011.
“We have got to a point where further cuts will require a reduction in head count and if we do that, then we are having to make decisions about which areas of science we fund and which areas of science we do not fund,” warned the chairman of the Moredun Foundation, Ian Dun ....
