Gretchen Whitmer Admin Acknowledges Nursing Home Deaths 'Could Be' Undercounted

Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Director Elizabeth Hertel acknowledged Thursday that coronavirus-related nursing home deaths “could be” undercounted in the state.
The Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) appointee disputed to the House Oversight Committee previously reported data that could indicate there has not been a full accounting of all deaths in long term care facilities.
Independent journalist Charlie LeDuff reported last week virus-related deaths could be undercounted by as much as 100 percent.
To date, MDHHS claims 29 percent of coronavirus-related deaths occurred in nursing homes, or about 5,600, according to Bridge. But LeDuff reported a review of vital records from March 2020 to June 2020 found 44 percent “were traced back to nursing homes and other long-term facilities.” ....

House committee subpoenas former Whitmer health chief

The state House Oversight Committee approved a subpoena Thursday to require former state health department Director Robert Gordon to testify.
Republicans have questions on the use of confidentiality agreements when Governor Gretchen Whitmer and top administration officials parted ways. Also whether Gordon differed with Whitmer’s decisions on the state’s COVID-19 response.
Representative Steve Johnson (R-Wayland) is the oversight committee chair. He said the committee’s been looking into the Whitmer administration’s use of confidentiality deals.
“And now we are to the point where I would like to move forward with issuing a subpoena,” he said. ....

The two chambers of the Michigan Legislature have spent more than $690,000 on confidential agreements associated with former employees in the last decade, according to information provided to the Free Press on Tuesday.
A few of these agreements are tied to employment and legal disputes. But additional details on who exactly received the payments, or why they were issued, could not be discussed because of confidentiality clauses, according to letters from legislative business offices. ....
