After winning top honors at last year’s Venice VR competition, directors Michelle and Uri Kranot haven’t exactly rested on their laurels. The filmmaking duo behind “The Hangman at Home VR” has further expanded the project into three new iterations, while simultaneously developing a separate animated feature.
In June alone, the Kranots will launch three new standalone versions of their award-winning project, which is adapted from a Carl Sandburg poem, at three different events.

A short film version, co-produced by Denmark, France, and Canada, recently claimed the Golden Dragon at the Krakow Film Festival, while the project will take two different forms at the NewImages and Tribeca festivals. ....

A journey into film character animation

Having just graduated from The Animation Workshop – an animation-focused university based in Denmark – with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Character Animation, Michelle Gruppetta says she has acquired an initiation into the world of animation from one of the top animation schools in the world.
Speaking to Times of Malta on her experience, Gruppetta described how, during her degree, she focused on giving life to characters and stories through a variety of film-making techniques, specialising in storyboarding, editing and directing.
“Each year of the course focused on a different animation technique: first year revolved around traditional hand-drawn animation, both on paper and digitally; second year concentrated on 3D computer generated animation and learning the software surrounding that; and finally, third year gave me an opportunity to focus on a specific skill set in the context of creating a graduation film with a team of fellow students. ....

The animated documentary, whose North American rights were acquired Friday (Jan. 29) by New York-based distributor Neon, tells the story of 36-year-old Amin Nawabi (a pseudonym) as he contends with revealing a “painful secret” kept hidden for more than two decades that threatens to ruin the life he and his soon-to-be husband have built. ....

Maltese-born Inez Kristina moved to Denmark to study character animation almost four years ago, which culminated in this opportunity to direct her first animated short film while still at school.
Cut It Out is an absurd surrealist character piece that follows Tara, an EOD technician (bomb defuser) who is guided by an authoritative voice to locate and defuse a bomb in a school. The bomb is unfamiliar to her, and despite her reservations, her supervisor leads her into a strange situation from which she needs to escape.
