A mathematics professor and researcher at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois, was indicted this week by a federal grand jury for grant fraud, after allegedly failing to disclose secret support he had received from the Chinese Communist Party and a Chinese university.
Southern Illinois University professor Mingqing Xiao was charged with two counts of wire fraud and one count of making a false statement, according to a press release by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).
According to court documents, Xiao fraudulently obtained $151,099 in federal grant money from the National Science Foundation (NSF) by concealing support he was receiving from China’s government, and Shenzhen University, a public university in China. ....

A federal grand jury in Carbondale, Ill. On Wednesday returned an indictment charging a mathematics professor and researcher at Southern Illinois University – Carbondale (SIUC) with two counts of wire fraud and one count of making a false statement. CARBONDALE, Ill. (KFVS) - An American mathematics professor and researcher Southern Illinois University in Carbondale was charged on April 21 with wire fraud and one count of making a false statement.
Mingqing Xiao was accused of fraudulently taking $151,099 in federal grant money from the National Science Foundation by hiding the support he was getting from the Chinese government and Shenzhen University, a public university in Guangdong Province in China. ....

The Justice Department indicted a Chinese-born Illinois college professor on two counts of wire fraud and a false statements charge for secretly working for a Chinese government-affiliated university and concealing those ties when applying for and receiving a $151,099 grant from the U.S. government’s National Science Foundation.
Mingqing Xiao, 59, was accused on Wednesday of “fraudulently” obtaining the federal grant money “by concealing support he was receiving from the Chinese government and a Chinese university” while he worked as a mathematics professor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he has been employed since 2000.
