Gisborne District Council Natural Heritage Fund has been
boosted from $40k to $100k for this funding
round.
Applications for the Natural Heritage Fund are
now open for private landowners in the district, who can
apply for assistance to protect or enhance indigenous
biodiversity on their land.
Any privately owned land
within the district is eligible for the funding, which is
made available instead of rates remissions on a limited
number of properties.
Biodiversity protection and
enhancement is a core activity of regional and unitary

After years of cuts, House eyes boost for Land, Water Fund

As budget plans begin to gel in Raleigh, it’s growing more likely that North Carolina’s Land and Water Fund, a longtime driver of clean water and conservation projects in the state, could receive funding this cycle at levels not seen in more than a decade.
The fund, which was formed under the 2013 merger of the Clean Water Management Trust Fund and the Natural Heritage Fund, issued just over $21 million in grants in its last cycle from a list of applications totaling four times that amount. One of several areas of state government not funded through one of last year’s mini budgets, the Land and Water Fund appropriation has remained where it was in 2018. This year’s Senate budget calls for upping that amount considerably to $73.2 million in this fiscal year and $53.2 million next year. ....

Growing calls for compensation for West Coasters facing land losses

Mayor Jamie Cleine and deputy Sharon Roche are also members of the Te Tai O Poutini Plan Committee responsible for writing a one district plan for the region. The pair did not vote with the committee when it decided to reject a report on the issue which included a map of potential SNAs.
They wrote to Shaw and Nanaia Mahuta to call for open dialogue and compensation for West Coasters.
The report showed the majority of the native vegetation on the West Coast was a potential SNA, the pair said. The issue was causing a “great deal of anxiety”, they said. ....
