RICE UNIVERSITY: Physics camp has proven benefits for high school girls

Rice studies also show hands-on engineering experiences help teachers engage students
Even a small effort up front can boost the abilities and confidence of girls as they anticipate taking challenging science courses.
A long-running summer program at Rice University and elsewhere that trains high school girls in basic physics concepts has proven successful in helping them thrive when they take on full courses the next year.
When leaders of Rice’s two-week day camp looked at similar programs beyond Houston, they found participants scored 3% better in high school physics than their counterparts who did not have the equivalent summer experience. ....

APS Joins Other Global Physics Societies in Open Access Statement

APS Joins Other Global Physics Societies in Open Access Statement
In a joint statement, major physics societies express strong support for open access and emphasize the need for a pragmatic and sustainable approach.
December 14, 2020
APS has joined 15 other international physics organizations in a call for universal access to knowledge and a commitment to sustainable open access. The statement, titled Achieving Open Access in Physics, reaffirms the innovative ways that the physics community has long supported open access (OA) through its preprint server (arXiv.org) and fully OA journals.
The physics societies caution, however, that some government mandates such as requirements proposed by cOAlition S a group of EU funding bodies would harm the freedom of researchers to choose the most appropriate venues for publication and would undermine viability of physics publishing that depends on high-quality peer review. ....

New curriculum improves students' understanding of electric circuits in schools

 E-Mail
FRANKFURT / TÜBINGEN. Life without electricity is something that is no longer imaginable. Whether it be a smartphone, hair-dryer or a ceiling lamp - the technical accomplishments we hold dear all require electricity. Although every child at school learns that electricity can only flow in a closed electric circuit, what is actually the difference between current and voltage? Why is a plug socket a potential death-trap but a simple battery is not? And why does a lamp connected to a power strip not become dimmer when a second lamp is plugged in?
Research into physics education has revealed that even after the tenth grade many secondary school students are not capable of answering such fundamental questions about simple electric circuits despite their teachers best efforts. Against this backdrop, Jan-Philipp Burde, who recently became a junior professor at the University of Tübingen, in the framework of his doctoral thesis supervised by Prof. Thomas Wilhelm at Goet ....
