Disability advocacy groups call for continued funding

The Queensland Government currently provides $4.9 million to the non-government sector to
deliver disability advocacy services; however, that funding ceases at the end of the financial year.
Rockhampton man and Queenslanders with Disability Network chair Des Ryan joined the campaign to keep the services funded.
“I don’t know where I would be today without advocacy,” he said.
“A change in circumstances for my primary carer meant I needed to transition to living on my own.
“Advocacy was critical to me getting the right supports in place, maintaining my independence and continue working – without it, I would likely have ended up in a nursing home.” ....

Significant projects completed at Gunnedah Showground


Gunnedah Shire Council
Gunnedah Shire Council has celebrated the completion of significant works at the Gunnedah Showground, with the multi-purpose facility transformed into an exciting major event venue.
The Showground redevelopment received $1.79 million in funding through the NSW Public Reserve Management Fund and two rounds of the NSW Government’s Stronger Communities Fund, supported by Council co-contributions of $442,775.
Completed work includes new rodeo and camp draft arenas, new grand stand seating, new amenities and shower block, and refurbishment of existing amenities buildings.
Enhancing safety and access was a key aim of the refurbishment, which also features a disability access upgrade to the gymnasium and the addition of 5 wheelchair accessible picnic tables and shelters. ....

More than 20 disability organisations have called on the federal government to abandon a plan which they say will force people to explain their support needs to a stranger in less than three hours, or risk losing their NDIS funding.
