Allen and I visited Death Valley National Park in mid-March, when it was a comfortable 80 degrees at Badwater Basin (elevation 282 feet below sea level).
We walked a half-mile into the basin then returned to the car to continue our adventures in the vast park.
I kept Death Valley on my weather app, just so I could look at on days like this. Today’s high there is expected to be 126. It will “cool down” overnight to 99 degrees. That makes temperatures here in the Grand Valley — 106ish in the day, 70ish overnight — a bit more tolerable, right?
So, how do you like your eggs cooked on the sidewalk? Fried or scrambled? ....

We’d play cars and trucks in the dirt, run through the frog-eyed sprinkler, or — this doesn’t seem right — play school, during our summer break. Remember the game that involved searching for an object, where you’d shout “you’re getting warmer,” as the searcher approached the object or “you’re getting colder,” when they moved farther away from it?
“You’re so cold you’re freezing” meant they were so far away they might as well start over.
I think Mother Nature’s playing that game with us this summer and we must have gotten really, really close. A few weeks ago I heard a little voice in my head shouting “you’re so hot you’re burning up,” when I’d crawl into the car after it sat in the sun all day. ....

I have a fascination for cairns, a series of stacked rocks that are often found on hiking and biking trails or along the edge of a river.
There’s mystery in cairns: Who built it? When? How did they get it to balance so precariously?
Rocks in general fascinate me. The shinier the better. Oddly shaped and shiny — now that’s a winner. I like to arrange and glue little rocks in my fairy garden scenes or just watch them shimmer in the sun. I have a box of rocks that need to get glued somewhere. Yes, I realize I need to get out more often. I’m trying. ....
